Department of Pharmaceutics
Pharmaceutics
is the discipline of pharmacy that deals with the process of turning a new
chemical entity (NCE)/ New Active Pharmaceutical ingredient (API) or old drugs
into a formulation to be used safely and effectively by patients. It is also
called the science of dosage form design. There are many chemicals with
pharmacological properties, but need special measures to help them achieve
therapeutically relevant amounts at their sites of action. Pharmaceutics helps
relate the formulation of drugs to their delivery and disposition in the body.
In other words Pharmaceutics is the scientific discipline concerned with the
process of creating the dosage form (such as a Tablet/ Capsule for oral
administration or a drug for parenteral or topical administration) to create a
therapeutic outcome. It encompasses drug formulation and manufacturing. In the
department of pharmaceutics, students lean to develop and analyze the physical
& chemical characteristics of the prepared formulation. Pharmaceutics lab
helps students to learn about different dosage forms like capsules, tablets,
ointments, suspensions, emulsions, syrup, injections, elixirs, suppositories,
eye drops, and cosmetics such as lipsticks, creams (cold and vanishing),
toothpaste, tooth powder, body powder, face powder, hair setting gel, after
shaving cream lotion, etc. These laboratories are equipped with a cooling
centrifuge, Franz diffusion cell apparatus, rotatory evaporator, homogenizer, tablet
disintegrator, vacuum desiccators, dissolution rate apparatus, friability
tester, capsule filling machine, capsule counter, UV cabinet, hot air oven,
thermostatically controlled water bath, double cone blender, Ball mill, digital
pH meter, magnetic stirrer, propeller, clarity test apparatus, ampoule washing
machine, bulk density apparatus, etc. to create the education process efficient
and effective.
Department of Pharmacology
The Pharmacology is the branch of Pharmaceutical sciences which deals with the bioavailability, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the medicinal drugs, including a substance’s origin, composition, therapeutic use, and toxicology. More specifically, it is the study of the interactions that occur between a living organism and chemicals that influence the normal or abnormal biochemical function. In the pharmacology laboratory, students received hands-on training in the bioassays of various drugs and the practical applications of pharmacology. The pharmacology lab is particularly planned to carry out animal model experiments for anti-hepatotoxic, cardiovascular-related disorders, antipyretic, analgesic, antihistaminic, anti-ulcer, and anti-inflammatory activity testing of known and novel drugs/chemicals. The pharmacology lab is also designed to study neurodegenerative disorders, translational neurobiology, including studies on Parkinson, Alzheimer’s, Huntington, epilepsy, painful neuropathies, and alcohol dependence. The lab is well equipped with instruments like Langendorff apparatus, student physiograph, ANY-Maze software for behavioral activities, Stereotaxic apparatus, isolated organ bath, isotonic frontal writing lever, Sherrington rotating drum and drum cylinder, tele thermometer, plethysmometer, histamine chamber, actophotometer, rota rod apparatus, Eddy’s hot plate, pole climbing apparatus, etc.
Central Instrument Room
The Central Instrument Room is a central facility, housing all sorts of sophisticated analytical instruments that are required for the identification, quantitative & qualitative evaluation of the drug component. The state of the art instrumentation facility is being established to enable our faculties and students to achieve excellence in multidisciplinary research with industry relevance.
Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry
The pharmaceutical industry is expanding day by day with the growth of medical fields worldwide. Pharmaceutical chemistry including Medicinal chemistry is a highly interdisciplinary science combining organic chemistry with biochemistry, computational chemistry, pharmacology, molecular biology, statistics, and physical chemistry. It involves the identification, synthesis and development of new chemical entities suitable for therapeutic use. It also includes the study of existing drugs, their biological properties, and their quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR). The lab at LKCTC (School of Pharmacy) has been aptly prepared to impart education related to Chemistry in a neatly designed, spacious and well-ventilated environment. The facilities available in the laboratory include Gas chromatograph, UV-visible spectrophotometer, electrochemical workstation, Flame Photometer, melting point apparatus, High temperature programmable-furnace and High-pressure reactor. Practical awareness is inculcated and students are trained to research both quantitatively and qualitatively during the lab sessions so that their understanding and problem-solving abilities are enhanced.
Department of Pharmacognosy
Pharmacognosy is the study of crude drugs obtained from medicinal plants, animals, fungi, and other natural resources. In short it is the study of drugs from natural resources. The varied techniques of extraction of active drug constituents, preserving their stability, driving appropriate storage conditions, various separation techniques employed to separate the drug constituents from non drug constituents are learned in the department of Pharmacognosy. The Pharmacognosy lab provides adequate facilities for morphological and microscopical studies of cells and tissues in different parts like root, stem, leaf, flower, fruit and seed of natural plants, identification and standardization of crude drugs. This lab provide an opportunity for the students to gain the knowledge of physicochemical properties of the natural products and natural medications also the identification tests, extraction, isolation, detection, determination and the estimation of natural products, quantitative and qualitative analysis of drugs and phytoconstituents extracted from medicinal plants. This lab also provides an opportunity for the students to gain the knowledge of plant tissue culture techniques, crop improvement, hybridization and colonal propagation etc. This lab is well equipped with various instruments like projection microscope, binocular microscope, laminar air flow, incubator, tissue culture station, autoclave, hot air oven, water bath with orbital shaker and vortex shaker.
Communication Skills Lab
Keeping pace with the present era of globalization and need for proficiency in English Language, the institute has designed communications lab with twenty-five terminals fully equipped with state-of-the-art interactive learning tools with internet connectivity. It is extremely beneficial for language learning and enhancement of effective communication skills, which are required to compete in the highly competitive & professional environment of today.
Machine Room
The machine room is equipped with the instruments and machinery used in the manufacturing (lab scale/ Pilot scale) of tablets, capsules, injectables, liquid orals and ointment filling & sealing stations. The machine room is spacious and well ventilated, housing single punch tablet machine, coating pan, dissolution rate test apparatus, disintegration rate test apparatus, ampoule filling and sealing machine, bottle filling machine, sieve shaker, capsule filling machine, mechanical stirrer, double cone blender, tray dryer and ointment filling machine. This laboratory provides a window for young and aspiring pharmacist to be well versed with the manufacturing aspect of different formulation in real time.
